Today's tip is all about Google Alerts.

Google Alerts are a great way to keep track of your business name, website, or blog. Google Alerts are emails automatically sent to you when there are new Google results for your search terms. You can also choose to have your alerts delivered via feed to the feedreader of your choice (e.g., Google Reader or add the feed to your iGoogle page).

They offer 6 different types of alerts: News, Web, Blogs, Comprehensive, Video, and Groups. I have all of my alerts set on Comprehensive, as this emails me links from any news story, website, or blog that mentions my business name.

To set up your own Google Alerts, simply visit the Google Alerts home page. Then, enter your search, the type of alert you'd like, how often you'd like them to check for results, and then enter your email address. When you've done all that, click the 'Create Alert' button. They'll send you a confirmation email. Be sure you click the link in that email to activate your Alert.

If you have lots of Google Alerts set up, you can manage them on on the "Manage Yours Alerts" page. To access this page, you'll need to have a Google Account. If you don't yet have an account, visit the Google Accounts home page to create one.

Another tip: I learned quickly that if I want to find specific words or phrases, I needed to put them in quotation marks. I had listed The Picture Perfect Boutique as an alert, but I was getting hundreds of emails because there were millions of articles on the web that had all 4 of those words in them somewhere. By changing it to "The Picture Perfect Boutique" I cut down on the massive amounts of emails, and only received notices when that exact phrase was used.

Thinking back, I realize that making jewelry has always been with me, even if vicariously, through my Mother and Dad. During the shortage of nice jewelry in WWII, I was very young ☺, my Mother made jewelry from seashells. I still have a few pieces. They were very unique and she sold most to make money to buy a new vacuum cleaner. A total of $89 - a lot of money back then! After I left home, both my parents started to make jewelry from pearls. Some of the patterns they used were the beginnings of today's more complicated beading patterns. I have some of those pieces too.
