Free Tip Friday: Naming Your Business

Free Tip Friday: Naming Your Business

Naming a Business - Ideas to Be Creative

Naming a business is more than just a title or description of your business, it is the initial representation of what you produce/supply/offer. So, with this in mind, you'll want to name your business something memorable / catchy / funny / unusual.

What are your options when naming a business?

Your first and easiest option would be to pay a specialist branding company to come up with a name for you. This may or may not be the perfect name for your business, but I can tell you it will certainly be expensive!

Second option would be to throw some names around between friends and family and pick the one that seems to stand out the most. This is a very hit and miss option and you are relying on people who may not be the most objective.

The third option (and in my opinion the best) would be to do some serious targeted research on the internet and find out exactly what people on the internet search for. If people are searching for specific words/terms, then surely it would make sense to adopt those words when naming a business. I use a free tool from Google called the 'Keyword Selector Tool'. It allows you to put in your main keyword or phrase, and it will then generate a list of keywords that are directly related. The best way to use the tool is to try and look for synonyms (similar words that mean the same) for your keyword. e.g. 'Dog'/'Canine'. Make a list of as many words as you can and put them into a text document. You can then add/mix/sort all the keywords until you come up with a great business name. The keyword selector tool will also tell you how many times per month that word or phrase has been searched for (a great indicator of popularity). It's obvious that the more times the keyword is searched for, the public must relate more to that keyword than others.

Now is the time to ask family and friends their opinion. Now the real research has been done and naming a business is not just a stab in the dark. Once you have decided on a few names, then you need to go and see if they have already been taken. If not, get it registered as soon as possible and then get yourself a domain name.

Ideas and inspiration are what you need when searching for a Cool Business Name.

Looking For a Deal?

Looking For a Deal?

Fresh Deals
Chances are, you're not made of money, and when you shop, you are looking for a bargain. Whether it's shopping for the holidays, or stocking up on items you need, or replacing a washing machine that jumps across the room during the spin cycle, you need a way to save money and cut costs. I understand that. And so does FreshDeals.com.

Fresh Deals is a great new website that combines the price shopping aspect of the common search engine with the with the warmth of the personal and interactive qualities that a social networking site offers.

Here's what their website has to say:
Fresh Deals is a refreshing new way for shoppers to find and share the latest online deals. We've spruced up your average shopping experience by offering a mix of fresh features including intuitive search and our thriving Questions & Answers community. Shoppers often have questions regarding the products they want to buy, but product reviews don't always have the answers. Our community of experts can answer a wide range of product questions, strengthening consumer confidence when it comes time to purchase. Never settle for stale shopping again. Start fresh. Shop Fresh Deals.

Members and shoppers can leave specific questions about items, and other members on the site can answer those questions. And I love how easy it is to rate a product. Just click the thumbs up if you've tried and liked the product. No lengthy forms to fill out, stars to highlight, or anything else. Once you click the thumbs up, the counter increases by one for other shoppers to see. That's it!

I have had way too much fun browsing this site. In the upper left corner, they offer the "Freshest Deal" at that time. I saw an amazing price on a Hoover Vacuum, and then it switched to a great price on a Nintendo wii pack. It changes often, so you're certain to find something you'll need whenever you stop by. Chances are, you'll see something new.

On their site, you can find everything from Microwave Ovens to Diamonds! There's literally every item you can think up listed on their category page.

I decided to do a search on Vacuum Cleaners, because I am desperate to get a new one. I was shocked to find there were 318 deals on Hoover Vacuums alone! WOW!

If you're looking for a particular item, and want to find the best price, stop by FreshDeals.com today. You're sure to find exactly what you're looking for.

And if you're a merchant and own a store, you can promote your business on FreshDeals!

Tanya of MAH Creations

Tanya of MAH Creations

This week our Featured Mom is Tanya with MAH Creations. I have personally worked with Tanya during our Americana Bash, and I can't get over how fabulous she is - or her products! Lucy's favorite dress is still her pillowcase dress from MAH Creations.

Tanya sent over a wealth of information - about her and her business - and I wanted to share it with you. Please take a few minutes and read on about this wonderful lady!

A Message from Tanya

Moms at Home Creations (MAH Creations) is an online boutique specializing in children’s clothing, gifts / accessories and home décor.  Founded in 2008 with a handful of talented ladies, this company now has over 50 moms coast to coast across the United States and growing weekly.  In the spring of 2009, M.A.H. launched the service side of the business now offering custom drapes, room painting, custom scrapbooking, monogramming services and specialty cakes and desserts.

The Concept

M.A.H. Creations began with a God-inspired idea in 2006. We are founded on the principles and practices of the woman in Proverbs 31. Each of our designers are Moms-At-Home (M.A.H.) that strive to keep a proper balance in their family life and professional life. The Proverbs 31 woman did just that.
  • She is productive.  Proverbs 31:13, "She seeks wool and flax, and willingly works with her hands."
  • She has her priorities in order. "She is like the merchant ships, she brings food from afar...she provides food for her household, and a portion for her maidservants." "She considers a field and buys it; from her profits she plants a vineyard." Proverbs 31:14-16
  • She is practical. In Proverbs 31:24, "she makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies sashes for the merchants".

The M.A.H. design team makes every effort to achieve this balance in our families.

M.A.H. Creations is an organization that believes in the importance of family and the sacrificial love a mother gives to her children specifically by choosing to be a housewife and stay at home mom. M.A.H. was created as an avenue to give these marketable mothers not only a way to express their God-given talents but to enable them to make a financial contribution to their families while enjoying all the benefits of staying at home and raising their children.

Our Mission
MAH Creations is more than just a business.  Our purpose is first give all praise to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who gives us our very breath and every ounce of creativity that pours forth in each product.  M.A.H. Creations believes that every home and every family should be afforded the privilege of a wife that not only meets her families daily needs inside the walls of her home but can also makes a contribution financially to her family.  Our company is designed to be an avenue to express creativity and God-given talent and a channel of sanity for moms of children of all ages.  Our commitment is to provide these women with a fulfilling, enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Our Product
We offer a wide variety of items from children’s clothing and accessories to gifts and home décor.  Some of our most popular items are our new line of sweater boots and hats, appliqué and screen print tshirts and our best selling designer fabric pillowcase dresses.

I Want to Start My Own Business, Where Do I Begin
I am frequently asked how this all came about.  I have to be quick to point out that God established this company from the very first idea, I could never have thought of such a great concept.  To other moms wanting to start their own business but not sure where to begin, I would say first and foremost pray for wisdom and direction.  Secondly, figure out what you love to do, whether that be something on the computer (which was my hobby), sewing, baking, designing, etc.  What do you find yourself doing most with your free time (or what do you think you would do if you had free time).  Once that is pinpointed and you are truly excited about it and have a passion about growing in that area, you are well on your way.  Talk with your family and develop goals for your new project and then create a timeline for accomplishing those goals.  Make some short and some long term goals and then get after them.  Thoughts never got anything done, take action!  Go for it!

Karen of Bella & Gracies

Karen of Bella & Gracies

This week's featured mom is Karen of Bella & Gracies. Karen offers some of the most beautiful hand-made children's items in her shop, and I'm excited to get to know more about her!

A Message From Karen
I am a mom of three children who loves to partake in any outdoor activities.  I love running, hiking, skiing and just enjoying the beautiful weather.  I am a college professor and also own a boutique.  Although teaching was my first love, I have found my creative side and truly enjoy creating the products for my boutique.

I never intended for my business to be where it is now. I started by just making flip flops and jewelry.  I really enjoyed showing my product and doing market places and vendor events.  My inventory eventually grew to clothing and now I own three sewing machines!!  I truly love what I do and really hope to continue growing my business so that I can one day pass it on to my daughter.

Currently I own a store on Etsy and have my products in three local boutiques.  I would like to expand my inventory in these boutiques and hopefully find a couple more to carry my product.  I also (of course) would like to create a following on Etsy.  I have found the online market very competitive so am working very hard to get my name out there.  I would like to offer any readers of this blog a 10% discount on my product.  Just convo me on Etsy and let me know you would like the discount and I can make a listing for you.

My website is http://www.bellaandgracies.etsy.com
My blog is bellaandgracies.blogspot.com

Please take some time this week and get to know our featured mom! Browse her site and check out all the fabulous items that she has to offer!

Also, she is hosting a giveaway on her blog, Bella & Gracies for a Baby Burp Cloth. For more information and to enter, please click here.

Thank you for your time, Karen! I wish you much success in your business!
