Review: Usborne Books

Recently I had the opportunity to review a book courtesy of Theresa Stothers of Usborne Books and More. She asked me what kind of book she should send. I asked her to pick one out that would appeal to two boys, ages 7 and 10. She sent How Things Work. The box arrived and I called the boys to see what was in it. They took the book and never looked back!

My 10 year old sat down with the book and read it cover to cover without ever putting it down! Then my 7 year old did the same. I am impressed! Here is a book that grabbed the attention of two children three years apart! It is colorful and has over 90 flaps that reveal the insides of car engines, escalators, submarines, microwaves and a lot of other machines. It is packed with inventions, machines, gadgets and devices and facts and information about how they work. It grabs the attention of younger children and is informative enough to grab and maintain - as well as educate - older children. This book makes learning fun!

I had heard about Usborne books for quite a while, but had never really been introduced to them. I thought...a book is a book, right? I could not have been more wrong! These books are really amazing and special! Since reviewing this book, I was able to go see a local Usborne book fair. I have to say I am really impressed with the range of books for boys and girls of all ages as well as the huge range of subjects. I think every child will be able to find a book (or books) that will be of interest to them. Instilling a love of reading in a child is a good thing!

Usborne books is the brainchild of Peter Usborne. He wanted to make educational non-fiction books for children. These couldn't just be any books though. These books had to be good enough to compete with TV and comic books. He borrowed ideas from both of these medias and worked with educational consultants and did exactly what he set out to do. Since 1973, Usborne titles have covered a wide range of subjects including history, science, geography, nature, hobbies and much more! Usborne books have rich, beautiful illustrations, great creative layouts and a plethora of information. Many of the Usborne books also have internet links! This means children can logon to websites (with parental supervision, of course) that will contain even more information!

I highly recommend that you check out Theresa's Usborne site today! The books are great and Theresa herself is wonderful too! Her customer service is top notch!
